Dwell Among Them

How absolutely incredible it is that our Creator God dwells among us? Can we even wrap our minds around this? We see so many references where God makes the declaration that he will dwell among his people (for example: Exodus 29:45, Leviticus 26:11, Numbers 35:34, 1 Kings 6:13, Ezekiel 37:27, Zechariah 2:10, etc.) Then, as we know, John 1:14 shares how everything changed when, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”  Luke 17:20-21 articulates our current reality this way: “The Kingdom of God does not come with observation; nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you”.

In all of this, we know a God who throughout history made His dwelling among His people. We know a Savior who put on human flesh and made His dwelling among the brokenness of humanity.  Today we wake, eat, work, sleep, breathe knowing the Spirit of God who dwells IN us. Knowing and understanding this simple yet profound truth leads me to one conclusion… that our call to reach others for the Kingdom of God requires of us that we would simply, “dwell among them”. It’s about stepping into other people’s lives, going to them, going to their circles, and allowing them to experience the Kingdom of God that is in us. It’s about inviting them into every aspect of our daily lives in a way that says, “follow me, as I follow Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1).

What will change our communities and our world? The best way I’ve heard it put is this: If we commit to extravagant time with Jesus and sacrificial time with others, change is absolutely guaranteed. May our lives be characterized by extravagant time with Jesus and sacrificial time with others. May we be able to echo what 1Thessalonians 2:8 says, “Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.” As we share the gospel with the world around, let us faithfully, sacrificially, graciously, and with great joy, share our lives as well!
