Follow Me

When we hear or see the words FOLLOW ME, there are many ideas at come to our minds. Like where are you going, do I want to go that way, or what do I have to give up following? Last month, I was driving up Highway 95 north to Riggins to preach that Sunday morning. It usually takes me right at 3 hours to get to the church from my house. That day, it took me about 15 minutes longer than usual.
As I was driving along the road, I came upon this bright orange sign that read “Construction Ahead, Reduce Speed”. It was just a few miles after that sign, I could begin to smell that hot oily smell, that you smell during road work. While slowing down to the posted speed, I could see the flagger ahead. We all have experienced that very moment. Just as we approached the flagger, they turned the sign around that BIG RED SIGN THAT SAYS STOP is facing us, and we have to stop.
After 5 minutes of sitting there watching the traffic traveling in the opposite direction, there was a truck with a big sign on the back with flashing lights saying – “FOLLOW ME”. It pulled over and stopped right in front of me! I was thinking to myself, I have traveled this road so many times before, I know the route, why do I need to follow this truck? Just get out of my way, I am on a “Mission From God” to get to Riggins! But that truck was there for my safety, the safety of the workers, and the safety of other vehicles. To Lead me through the construction, and not following would lead me to put myself and others in danger.
Luke 9:57-62, shows us a similar situation, of some individuals that were asked to follow me.
57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
In our Scripture the cost of following Jesus is expensive!
Have you considered the cost? Have you considered what it to take to follow Jesus?
Jesus could have talked about a mansion over the hill top – but he didn’t.
He could have talked about streets of gold – but he didn’t.
He could have talked about eternal life with no more sorrow and more pain – but he didn’t. And do you know why? It’s because – before there
is a Crown there is always a Cross.
We must count the cost to follow Jesus! Are we going to choose Comfort or the Cross? What is it going to cost me to really follow Jesus?
You know – all of us could hesitate. But there comes a time when you must make a choice. The opportunity may not appear again. Choose quickly – Jesus is saying Follow ME!
Jesus wants us to love him first – to follow him – to serve him. If we are going to follow Jesus – we must move forward – not backward. We must put him first and move on. He wants total commitment from us. He is saying, Follow ME! We are tempted to be a spectator, not a disciple.
There are a lot of spectator in Churches today, but the Lord is looking for those that are not spectators but disciples.
Jesus said to the first man: “Count the COST”.
Jesus said to the second man: “Leave it BEHIND”.
Jesus said to the third man: “Don’t look BACK”.
It’s time to make a choice to Follow HIM!
